What to wear on a snowmobile tour

Check which gear your tour includes. Warm hands and feet matter most on the ride, and they depend on what you wear underneath.

A snowmobile ride in Lapland means an hour or more in cold wind, much of it without moving much. One reviewer describes being handed "all the gear—clothes and helmets" before the ride; the inclusions of each tour are listed on its product page. The layers under that gear are yours, and the reviews show why they matter: "It was very cold, and the equipment (especially the boots) was 'limited' as a result", writes one reviewer of an evening safari.

About this tour

Snowride Lapland's family tour carries children under 1.40 m in a heated sleigh behind the snowmobile, which matters on cold days when a passenger sitting still gets cold quickly. Groups are limited to eight.

The tour is new on the booking platform and has few or no reviews yet.

  • Children under 1.40 m ride in the heated sleigh.
  • Maximum 8 participants.
  • Drivers need a valid driving licence.

What the operator hands out

Where the operator provides the gear, the outer layer is theirs: typically an overall worn over your own clothes, plus a helmet. One reviewer describes being given "all the gear—clothes and helmets" and a driving lesson before heading into the forest. Kit lists differ between tours, so check "What's included" on the product page of yours.

The layers underneath

Dress as you would for a cold winter day and let the overall block the wind on top:

  • Base layer: thermal underwear, top and bottom, in wool or a synthetic fabric. Avoid cotton, which holds sweat and then chills you.
  • Mid layer: a fleece or wool jumper. On the coldest days add thin insulated trousers.
  • Socks: one good pair of warm wool socks. Two thin pairs stacked squeeze the foot and make it colder.
  • Liner gloves: thin gloves worn inside the operator's gloves or mittens keep your fingers working at photo stops.
  • Neck gaiter or balaclava: closes the gap between the collar and the helmet.
  • Your own hat for the breaks, when the helmet comes off.
◈
Hands and feet first

They get cold first on a snowmobile. Warm socks and liner gloves make the biggest difference for the least effort.

Colder in the evening, colder as a passenger

Evening safaris are colder than day tours, and the campfire break means standing still. The passenger behind the driver sits still, too, and gets cold faster than the person steering. If you share a snowmobile, the one riding at the back should wear the warmer layers. Even a short tour can be enough in deep cold: one reviewer found an hour-long excursion "more than enough as it was super cold outside".

Children in the sled

Children ride in a sled or sleigh behind a snowmobile and do not move for the whole ride. Dress them one layer warmer than yourself, with extra attention to hands, feet and face. Snowride Lapland uses a heated sleigh for children under 1.40 m. More on the family formats on our family page.

Glasses, cameras and phones

If you depend on glasses, check with the operator how they fit under the helmet before you book. Phones and camera batteries drain fast in the cold. Keep them in an inside pocket between photo stops.

◈
Not clothing, but pack it anyway

Drivers need a valid category B car licence, and several operators accept only the physical card. A photo of it, a digital or a temporary licence is not accepted. Pack the card itself. Where a listing states an age, drivers must be at least 18; one small-group tour asks for drivers aged 20 or older.

FAQ

Do I need my own thermal suit for a snowmobile tour?

Check the inclusions on the product page of your tour. One reviewer describes being handed the gear, including clothes and helmets, before the ride. What you wear under the thermal suit is up to you.

What should I wear under the thermal overall?

Thermal underwear in wool or a synthetic fabric, a fleece or wool mid layer, one pair of warm wool socks, thin liner gloves and a neck gaiter. Cotton stays damp once you sweat, so leave it at home.

Is it colder on an evening tour?

Yes. Temperatures drop in the evening, and you stand still at the campfire. One reviewer of an evening safari describes a very cold night and boots that were not warm enough. Layer up a notch.

What should children wear in the sled?

One layer more than the adults, with extra care for hands, feet and face, because they sit still for the whole ride. A heated sleigh, as on Snowride Lapland's family tour, helps.
