The season month by month

November

Early winter

Only a few early-winter tours run, and whether they go ahead depends on how much snow has fallen. Check the available dates on the product page before you plan a trip around one.

December–January

Dark mid-winter

The days are very short this close to the Arctic Circle, so even day tours ride in soft twilight, and evening safaris are in full darkness. The aurora is possible, but clouds decide: one reviewer's December evening brought no northern lights "due to the weather".

February–March

Snow and returning light

The days lengthen quickly, and long day safaris get more light to ride in. Warm spells still happen: one reviewer of the 3-hour safari was "unlucky because it was too warm and the route was a single wave run" in March.

April

Late season

Long, bright days, and snow that depends on the year. One April rider found "almost no snow" and drove over rocks and mud; another was happy to find a location with snow "in april so thats HUGE". Book with free cancellation and watch the conditions.

Evening or day?

If the northern lights are part of the plan, choose an evening safari in the dark months and treat the aurora as a bonus rather than the purpose. No operator can guarantee it. Our northern lights snowmobile page compares the evening tours. If the ride and the landscape come first, the later part of the season gives you more daylight for a long or full-day safari.

What reviewers found late in the season

The end of the season is the least predictable part. Reviews from April describe both a ride with good snow and one where "there was almost no snow - instead, we were going through rocks, mud, grass, and patches of ice". The snow cover cannot be planned months ahead. If a late-season date is your only option, book with free cancellation (the tours we checked can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start) and look at the conditions shortly before you go.

Cold is part of every month

Mid-winter is the coldest part of the season, and evening safaris are colder than day tours. Whatever month you choose, dress in warm layers under the thermal gear. The what-to-wear guide has the list, with extra care for children riding in a sled.

FAQ

When is the snowmobile season in Rovaniemi?

From around December to April, depending on the snow cover. In November only a few early-winter tours run, and they depend on how much snow has fallen.

Can I go snowmobiling in Rovaniemi in November?

Only on the few early-winter tours, and only if there is enough snow. Check the available dates on the product page before you plan around one.

Is April too late for snowmobiling?

It depends on the year. Reviews from April describe both good snow and tracks with almost no snow. If you travel in April, book with free cancellation and check the conditions shortly before the tour.

When is the best time for a northern lights snowmobile tour?

The dark months of the season give the longest evenings. The aurora depends on solar activity and a clear sky, so it is never guaranteed in any month.

When is the best time for a long day safari?

Late winter and spring, when the days are longer and you ride more of the route in daylight. Warm spells can soften the trail, so keep an eye on the conditions.
