The safaris are driven by adults with a car licence. Children ride as passengers, and the listings describe different ways of doing it:

Cold is the main issue for children

A child sitting still in a sled gets cold much faster than the adult who drives. Dress children in extra layers under the thermal suit, keep hands and feet warm and choose a shorter format for younger children. Adults feel it too: one reviewer of an adults-only tour writes that the hour-long excursion "was more than enough as it was super cold outside". A heated sleigh takes some of the edge off, and a one-hour tour is easier to manage than half a day.

Tours that are not for children

Some tours set age limits that rule out a family trip with younger children. Wild Nordic's 3-hour tour is for adults only, Wild about Lapland's wilderness ride requires every participant to be 18 or older, and Safartica's full-day safari starts at age 12. On the ice-fishing safari drivers must be 18 or older. Check the age line in the tour details before you book.

Adults still share the driving

Two adults usually share one snowmobile and swap drivers along the way. With a child in the guide's sled or sleigh, both adults can take turns at the handlebars. Where a solo snowmobile is offered, it costs a supplement. The licence rules are the same as on every other tour: a valid category B car licence, and on several tours only the physical card counts.

Drivers need a valid category B car licence, and several operators accept only the physical card. A photo of it, a digital or a temporary licence is not accepted. Pack the card itself.
